The Rulings of Sadaqatul Fitr

Definition: Sadaqatul Fitr is an extra charity a person must give on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr.


Status: It is Waajib (compulsory) to give Sadaqatul Fitr upon the one who meets the following conditions.


Sadaqatul Fitr is Fardh on:

  1. The one who is muslim.

    1. The guardian should pay Sadaqatul Fitr on behalf of his immature or insane children born before the day.

  2. The one who is free.

  3. The one who owns the Nisaab of Zakaah.

    1. The Nisaab of gold is 87.48 grams and the Nisaab of silver is 612.36 grams or their equivalent in cash or business merchandise.

    2. The Nisaab does not have to be held for one complete lunar year unlike Zakaah.


Rulings of Sadaqatul Fitr:

  1. The time of Sadaqatul Fitr starts from after Fajr Salaah on the Day of Eid-ul-Fitr.

  2. It should be given before one reaches the Eid Gaah, but it can be given after the Salaah.

  3. It can also be given before the day of Eid, during the month of Ramadhan, and if not given on the day of Eid, must still be given afterwards.

  4. Sadaqatul Fitr is to give 3.75 lbs of wheat or flour or 7.5 lbs of dates, raisins, or barley, or their equivalent value.

  5. The avenues of Sadaqatul Fitr are the same as the avenues of Zakaah.
